The HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148dw is a printer for cramped workplaces with rather little printing. There is no display on the device. The buttons for controlling the wireless function are released next to status LEDs via foils. Accordingly, it is neither one of the fastest printers nor is it particularly well equipped. There is even no separate button for copies/scans, which may be surprising for an office printer. Regardless of the type of paper used, the print image is above all criticism and the print is purring quietly and without annoying paper jams. The printing unit works quickly at 28 pages per minute. According to HP, the first print page should be put on paper in under 7 seconds. It is not a conventional paper cassette, but basically just a simple compartment in which up to 250 sheets of normal paper can be inserted. A housing flap then ensures that the supply is protected from dust and, thanks to the viewing window, also enables a view of the remaining capacity. A 10-sheet bypass feeder is also conveniently integrated, but the flap must be opened for this. There is space here, for example, envelopes or labels, which the device processes with priority. So it is not possible to have sheets permanently inserted here. The maximum paper thickness must not exceed 163 g / m². When printing from the cassette or manual feed, the paper can automatically be turned and thus printed on both sides. The integrated duplex unit for this is standard in the series. The regular paper output takes place on the top of the printer using the face-down method typical of laser printers. The HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148dw printer has a 1,200 dpi scanner including a 35-sheet document feeder (ADF), which can only read documents in simplex format. To scan and copy the reverse side, the scanned stack must be turned over manually. On the housing itself, there is a two-line text display with blue background lighting and a membrane keyboard that is usually difficult to use. This multifunction printer with fax, it also equipped with a number field so that the recipient’s phone number can be conveniently entered. The printer can be connected via USB or integrated into the network via WiFi. The common standards from Airprint to Google Cloudprint are also supported. On the driver side, the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148dw even understands PCL and Postscript and can therefore be controlled by special applications relevant to companies. The operation is also considered intuitive if there were not unnecessary circumstances such as the mandatory USB installation – even with WLAN operation.
