The OfficeJet already has the office in its name and, as expected, does a good job of printing texts and documents. The black is very strong and the texts are pleasantly sharp. Only the comparatively leisurely printing speed bothers. The multifunction device HP OfficeJet 5742 is ideal for use at home or in the small home office. However, the moderate working speed already speaks against overly high demand for printing, scans, and copies. When it comes to photo and graphic printing, the device impresses with its very natural color display. There is even a separate compartment for photo paper. Colors are very strong by default. If that doesn’t suit you, you can use color profiles to make improvements – an amazing achievement for an office printer. The scan quality is very high, even if colored documents often have a slight red cast. With copies, there is a slight loss of quality, which is noticeable in areas of color and background. For an office printer, the cost of black and white printing is quite high. In the home office and the occasional printing in private business, this is still justifiable, especially if you value high print quality. The yield of the black cartridge is relatively low at 600 pages. Color printing with the HP OfficeJet 5742 is also quite expensive. Particularly critical here: The color cartridges are only available as a combination cartridge and not individually. In addition, with a combination cartridge, one color is usually faster than the others, which means that you have to replace the entire cartridge more quickly, even though only a single color is empty. In terms of printing and scanning equipment, the OfficeJet is absolutely exemplary. Duplex printing, scanning by flatbed or automatic document feeder as well as single-sheet feeder in one device are excellent for this price range. Only the duplex scan remains on the wish list. There are hardly any wishes left unfulfilled with the interfaces. Direct printing via USB or memory card, network via cable or WLAN and even modern interfaces such as NFC and cloud connection have made it into the device. The HP OfficeJet 5742 setup is done quickly and almost self-explanatory. What is unpleasant, however, is that various personal data such as the zip code and the number of employees in the company are requested during installation without the option to skip this step.
