The HP Smart Tank Plus 578 is a color multifunction inkjet printer with an automatic document feeder called “without cartridges” since it has ink tanks on board. At first glance, the printer is a classic printer. However, there are transparent slots on the front that allow you to see the ink level of the four reservoirs. As with other ink tank printers, the installation of this Smart Tank includes filling said tanks. In the case of HP, it is also necessary to install the printheads, but access is not very easy. However, we appreciate the printer alignment process, which corrects any misalignment by scanning a test page printed by the printer itself. The user, therefore, has almost nothing to do except place the test sheet on the scanner glass. The printer is quite large (44.9 x 37.3 x 19.8 cm). In addition, you will need about 10 cm more above, 10 cm more behind, and 20 cm more in front of the HP Smart Tank Plus 578 printer to insert and release the paper. The only paper inlet of the printer with a capacity of 100 sheets, is on the back. We would have preferred a paper cassette at the front of the printer, less prominent and which would have avoided leaving the sheets in the open air. The automatic document feeder has a capacity of 35 sheets and the paper output tray has a capacity of 30 sheets. The control panel consists of a 5.89 cm (2.2 ”) monochrome touch screen. The latter, not tilting and with mediocre viewing angles, is far too small to navigate pleasantly. Above all, this touchscreen responds quite poorly to touch and can therefore prove difficult to use. Physical keys to navigate between menus would have been much more practical. The printer delivers high-speed scans and copies. Thus, it only takes 7 seconds to scan an A4 document at 100 dpi in monochrome and 10 seconds for a 10 x 15 cm photo at 300 dpi in color. As for copies, they take 8 seconds for a monochrome document and 17 seconds for color. Unfortunately, the quality of the renderings is not quite there. The copies remain readable, but the loss of quality is noticeable. For the rest, the connection is reduced to a minimum with the sole presence of a USB-B port. The HP Smart Tank Plus 578 also manages Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct printing. Unfortunately, it lacks an automatic two-sided mode.
