It is small at 12.5 cm by 8.5 cm, the portable printer takes up less than the area of a CD. The weight of 180 grams is roughly equivalent to what a smartphone weighs. HP decided on a friendly design in light tones. The housing, which is 50 percent recycled from old plastic, is in two parts. If you remove the cover, you can slide the paper into the designated compartment. The HP Sprocket Photo prints the photos on the 5.8 x 8.7 cm ZINK photo sheets. ZINK stands for “Zero Ink”, a printing process without ink. The color pigments are already in the paper, the printer activates them through different temperatures and exposure times. The process is similar to that of the thermal receipt printer at the supermarket checkout. While this only puts dark text and graphics on the paper, zinc printouts are multicolored. The HP Sprocket Photo setup is very simple. Download the HP Sprocket app for Android or iOS. Then start the application that will guide you through the rest of the installation process. Setting up the Bluetooth connection between smartphone and printer is simple, but error-prone. The phone and HP Sprocket Photo did not communicate correctly until a firmware update was installed. To save energy, the HP device suspends the connection when the appends. The printer does not support Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, or NFC. If you are out and about in the app, it first builds the gallery preview on your phone. Alternatively, you have the option of synchronizing Instagram, Facebook, and Google Photos to select already uploaded snapshots for printing. In terms of print settings, the app initially offers you a single print and two tiled formats for larger prints. You can edit photos with a limited set of settings and pre-designed design overlays. A nice feature is the AR code. In the Sprocket app, you pull a still image from a previously recorded clip, and the app provides this with an AR code. If you scan this with your smartphone, you can watch the video, if it is available. Overall, HP delivers the Sprocket Photo with a short USB charging cable, two instructions, and a total of 20 sheets of photo paper. You can find detailed brief instructions digitally on HP’s product page or from our site.
